A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J Maas is the newest book in the A Court of Thorns and Roses series, and it follows Nesta as she tries to figure out her new life as a Fae, with a little help from Cassian. The story picks up a year after A Court of Frost and Starlight. During that year, Feyre and Elain gave Nesta her space, hoping she’d come to terms with everything she went through. But instead, Nesta only got worse. Now she’s given one last shot to set things right, and she has to work with the one person she can’t stand — Cassian. This book is both heartbreaking and uplifting, diving deep into how trauma affects our lives and the steps we can take to heal.
Honestly, Nesta was never my favorite character… until I read this book. I thought she was unnecessarily cruel and brash, only caring about herself and how others’ situations reflected on her. But I was so wrong! Nesta is more like Feyre than I realized. In fact, I’d even say they’re pretty much the same, which probably explains why they don’t get along. While Nesta puts up a tough exterior, inside she’s cracked, broken, and struggling. Watching her helplessly see Elain turn into a Fae after Hybern’s king, and facing her own dark destiny, was just the tip of the iceberg she had to overcome. Her father’s death haunts her every waking moment, and she’s overwhelmed by trust issues — the people she should be able to rely on fear her power and push her away.
This all leads to the person we meet at the start of the book — a callous drunk sleeping around just to keep nightmares at bay. Then Cassian shows up after one wild night, and forces her to go to Feyre. That moment is a turning point for Nesta. Feyre gives her some tough love: move to the House of Wind, work in the library, stop drinking, train with Cassian — or go back to the mortal world and live alone, since she’s shut everyone out. Resentful and bitter, Nesta grudgingly accepts, and that’s where her journey begins.
Cassian is one of my favorites in the series. I could read stories about him and Azriel all day! As the commander of Rhys’s armies, Cassian has big shoes to fill. He’s always been a jokester, downplaying his responsibilities because he doesn’t believe in himself. He thinks he’s just an Illyrian bastard, even though he’s full of power. After losing a huge force in the war, Cassian has to rebuild trust with his troops and find peace within himself. Now, he’s also tasked with training Nesta, and honestly, he’s barely holding it together. But despite everything, Cassian sees Nesta’s true self and realizes they aren’t that different.
So much happens in this story! Nesta’s battling severe PTSD, Cassian is taking on more responsibility, and there’s a quest for three mythical artifacts that could change everything in Prythian. I loved every word — even the tough parts. I laughed a lot, cried a little, and swooned majorly. I also really enjoyed the two new characters who become Nesta’s friends and confidantes later on. They’re amazing, and I hope we see more of them soon.
Overall, I absolutely loved A Court of Silver Flames. I couldn’t put it down. Honestly, I was hesitant to keep reading the series because I thought it had a perfect ending, but I’m SO glad I kept going. Nesta and Cassian are such a perfect match! The story needed to be told, and I really appreciated how Maas handled Nesta’s depression and self-loathing. It made her so real and relatable. If you’re a fan of the series, I highly recommend this book — it’s a powerful, emotional ride that I think you’ll love as much as I did! 😊
Ahhhh I had mixed feelings about this book for a good chunk of it because I wasn’t sure how I felt about Nesta. But by the end of it, I freaking fell in love with her. This book is so different from the rest of the books in this series in that it’s a story of healing, friendship, and love. And I loved all of the new characters we met, like Gwyn and Emerie. Their STRENGTH was truly inspiring, as was Nesta’s character growth.
I can’t wait for more audiobook in this series. I’m not ready to leave this world The best series I’ve read in a really. long. time. I will be not so patiently waiting for a audiobook on Az
