Let me start by saying I sat down to read this book and couldn’t put it down until I finished it in just 24 hours. That’s so rare for me these days, especially as I get older.
My standards for a good book have gotten higher since I have less time to read. I’m someone who won’t hesitate to put a book down if it’s not grabbing me after a few chapters. My requirements are pretty simple though — great writing, engaging storylines, believable characters, and a satisfying “HEA.”
ACOTAR totally blew me away because I only picked it up because I was super interested in its retelling of Beauty and the Beast, which is one of my favorite stories. I also love the faery court politics, so I was already hooked. Honestly, I was a little skeptical about YA fantasy — I’ve read some that make me roll my eyes — but ACOTAR checked all the boxes: world-building, character growth, romance, and action.
WORLD BUILDING: Honestly, I wish this Fae world could come to life on screen. I loved the illustrated map before starting — it made imagining Prythian so much easier. I would definitely read more books about each Court and High Lord if Maas ever decided to write about them all. Most of the story takes place in the Spring Court, and I felt like I was right there walking with Feyre during her adventures.
ROMANCE: Thank goodness there’s no “insta-love” here — I really appreciate slow burns in stories. They make the love story so much more meaningful and satisfying. I’ll admit, I wasn’t a huge fan of Tamlin at first — he seemed pretty stiff and bland — but after the night of the Spring ritual (fans self), I started falling for him just as much as Feyre did. Their relationship felt real and believable, especially as it grew. My only small gripe is that even though his face was hidden, it was obvious he was handsome — which kind of contradicts the theme of loving someone beyond their looks, like in Beauty and the Beast.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT: Feyre was brave but also very human — she made mistakes, but I always understood her motivations. At first, some characters seemed to act “just because,” which felt a little forced. But as the story went on and layers were peeled back, their actions made so much more sense.
ACTION: If you’re expecting nonstop action from start to finish, you might be a little disappointed. The first ¾ of the book is pretty calm, with only a few scenes of excitement. But when the action hits in the last part, it’s really thrilling and well done.
Even though this is just the first book in a planned trilogy, I think it stands strong on its own. The main storyline wrapped up nicely, and I felt satisfied, but there was just enough tease to make me want to read more. I hate when series leave you hanging with cliffhangers — it just makes waiting so frustrating, especially when you have to wait a whole year for the next book.
Personally, I highly recommend this book. It’s a captivating read that I really enjoyed and couldn’t put down. I honestly loved it so much that I think you will too. It’s definitely one of those stories I’ll come back to again and again.
Just a heads up — the sex scenes are a bit more detailed than most YA books, so if that’s a concern for you or younger readers, keep that in mind.
Asdfghjkl I LOVED this book. It took me a little bit to get into just cause there’s a good amount of world building that has to happen at the beginning but then I FLEW through the second half. I loved the world, the politics, the romance, and all the characters. The ending had me on the edge of my seat. And I’ve now immediately gone out and purchased the second book
