https://amzn.to/4bfrM6A ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐The Martian was my favorite book in 2016 and I loved the movie when I saw it in 2017. When I heard Andy Weir was releasing a new book, I was so excited and couldn’t wait for it to come out. In November last year, Artemis hit the shelves. The blurb said it was another space story, but this time set on the Moon. Wow! I was super eager to get a copy and dive back into Weir’s universe. 🌙
Just like The Martian, this book has a lot of the author’s signature detailed explanations, which I think really add to the authenticity. It shows how well-researched everything is and makes you believe that what’s happening could actually be scientifically possible. I honestly think this makes the story so much more engaging.
Artemis is a settlement on the Moon made up of domes named after famous astronauts, where about 2000 people live. Besides mining, tourism is a big part of its economy. Wealthy visitors from Earth come to vacation on the Moon, and one of the main attractions is the lunar landing site. It reminded me of the mock-up I visited at NASA in Florida, but instead of sitting in a theater with a replica lander, the tourists actually get to see the real landing module and footprints through a thick glass wall. It’s pretty incredible!
The main character, Jazz, is a young woman working as a courier, delivery person, and small-time smuggler. She seemed nice enough, but I have to admit I didn’t really connect with her. Maybe it’s just me, but I find it easier to root for characters who are on the side of good. Still, I guess we all love Han Solo, and he was a smuggler too!
Honestly, I found the first half of the book pretty slow. I get it — it was all about setting up the story — but it wasn’t as engaging as I expected. Maybe I was expecting too much after loving The Martian. Still, I kept going because I remembered how much I liked Weir’s first book and wanted to see where the story was headed. Jazz is a strong woman driven by her need for money and a desire to improve her life. However, her self-focused decisions early on made her some enemies, which sets up the tension for what’s to come.
Once the story moved into the second half, things really picked up. The plot thickened, the pace quickened, and suddenly it was so much more exciting. Jazz had to dig deep and come up with creative ways to handle her situation — I loved that about The Martian, where you see characters making the most of what they’ve got to survive.
Without spoiling too much, there was a part in the second half I thought could have been even more thrilling if it had been the main focus instead of the slower parts earlier on. I think that would have made the story even more exciting.
Overall, I think Artemis is a good book that gets better as you go along. If you’re struggling through the first half, just hang in there — it’s worth it. It’s not quite as amazing as The Martian, but it definitely still entertains sci-fi fans. I personally recommend it and really enjoyed reading it! 😊🚀
