Joan Goodwin has harbored a fascination with the stars for as long as she can remember. Reflective and reserved by nature, Joan finds contentment in her role as a physics and astronomy professor at Rice University and as the aunt to her bright and inquisitive niece, Frances. That is, until she stumbles upon an advertisement calling for the inaugural female scientists to join NASA’s space shuttle program. In an instant, Joan’s quiet world ignites with a fierce desire to be among the select few to venture into space. https://audiobooks.ink/product..../atmosphere-taylor-2
Chosen from thousands of hopefuls in the summer of 1980, Joan embarks on her training at Houston’s Johnson Space Center, alongside an extraordinary group of peers: the skilled Top Gun pilot Hank Redmond, and scientist John Griffin, both of whom remain kind and approachable under pressure; mission specialist Lydia Danes, who has sacrificed much in pursuit of her goals and has little patience for niceties; warm-hearted Donna Fitzgerald, secretly carrying her own burdens; and Vanessa Ford, the charismatic and enigmatic aeronautical engineer, capable of repairing any engine and flying any aircraft.
As these unlikely comrades form bonds and prepare for their inaugural missions, Joan uncovers a newfound passion and love she never anticipated. Through this awakening, she begins to question everything she believed about her role in the vast universe.
Then, in December 1984, during the STS-LR9 mission, everything changes in an instant.
Fast-moving, intense, and deeply emotional, Atmosphere is Taylor Jenkins Reid at her finest – drawing readers into unforgettable moments and places, crafting multi-dimensional characters, and weaving a heartfelt, soaring narrative about the transformative power of love – this time, among the stars.

https://amzn.to/40DGxtU 😉I’d give Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid 4 stars ⭐️. At first, it started out pretty slow for me, but since the story is set in Houston at the Johnson Space Center, I found it really intriguing. The slow burn of Vanessa and Joan’s love story was totally worth it in the end. I wasn’t expecting it to be a romance between two women, but once Vanessa was introduced, I knew right away. I just had a gut feeling Joan would find that person who makes her feel like she belongs in this world, especially since she didn’t quite know how to fit in before.
Since the story takes place in the late 70s and early 80s, it’s honestly so sad that they had to hide their love. Joan’s family dynamic was really well written, and I found myself rooting for Frances so much. I was so happy that Frances always had Joan’s back, and the relationship Vanessa built with her, even though she didn’t quite know how, was just beautiful. I do wish there had been an epilogue though — I’d love to know what happened to them years later.
Throughout the book, I found myself holding my breath so many times because we partially know what happens to the crew early on. But as we get to know them, you really start to love this found family, going through NASA training together. The ending had me crying and gasping for air — it’s such an intense story that literally comes down to the wire, right at the last sentence. Taylor Jenkins Reid’s detailed research on space, NASA, and space travel really shows, and I appreciated how accessible she made it for someone like me who doesn’t have much space knowledge.
The relationship between Joan and Vanessa was so well done — I could totally see this turning into a mini-series I’d love to binge-watch. Everything played out so perfectly, and the storytelling was just fantastic.
I honestly recommend this book to anyone who loves stories about space, love, and self-discovery. I really enjoyed it, and I think you will too! It’s a beautiful, emotional ride that I won’t forget. 🌟
