Alice Feeney has done it again with another twisty story full of unreliable characters and a really cool setup. While it’s not my absolute favorite of her books, I had so much fun reading it. 😊
I highly recommend this audiobook — it kept me hooked from start to finish. I really enjoyed every moment and couldn’t put it down!
We follow writer Grady Green, who, at the beginning, is anxiously waiting by the phone to hear if his latest book has made the New York Times bestseller list. His wife Abby is on her way home, and Grady is a little annoyed she’s not right there with him. He calls her to ask where she is, only to hear her slam on the brakes while they’re talking. Abby says she’s stopped because there’s a woman lying in the road, and she’s going to help.
But after that, Grady never hears from her again. What happened to Abby? A year later, Grady is still mourning her loss and asking questions.
Feeling depressed, unable to write or sleep, Grady’s agent Kitty suggests he take a break and stay in a small cabin she owns on a remote island in Scotland called the Isle of Amberly. With no cell service and limited access to the mainland, it seems like just the thing he needs to get his creative juices flowing again.
But from the moment he arrives, things feel…off. Only twenty-five people live on the island, and tourists can only visit a few months a year. There are no landlines or cell service, and everyone carries walkie-talkies. When Grady moves into the cabin, he has this strange feeling that someone is watching him, and he’s pretty sure someone has been inside and moved things around. The ferry is the only way on and off, and it’s schedule is unreliable. Then he thinks he sees Abby again, which makes everything even more confusing.
Feeney creates some really intriguing mysteries right from the start. First, what really happened to Abby? Did she leave Grady and fake her disappearance? Was she kidnapped or worse? Since no body was ever found, her fate remains a mystery. Then there’s the island itself. Even though the locals seem friendly, Grady doesn’t feel totally welcome. At first, he enjoys the peace and quiet, but gradually Amberly feels more and more sinister. Is he just imagining things or is something darker happening? I loved how Feeney builds the suspense with small events that all add up to a lot of weirdness — I couldn’t stop reading to find out what was really going on. It almost has a Twilight Zone vibe, which I thought was fantastic.
Most of the story is told from Grady’s perspective, but there are also chapters from Abby’s point of view. Her sections turn everything Grady says upside down and make the story even more confusing. Honestly, I found Abby to be way more sympathetic than Grady, who comes off as a bit whiny and entitled.
Feeney is known for her epic twists, and she definitely delivers — but honestly, some of the twists left me more puzzled than shocked. I won’t spoil anything, but I’ll say that one twist involving Abby’s fate made no sense to me and just left me confused. Still, the story is super entertaining and kept me hooked, which is why I’m giving it four stars despite some unsatisfying twists.
Overall, I think this audiobook is a great listen and perfect for anyone who loves a good mystery with lots of surprises. I definitely recommend it — I enjoyed it so much and will probably listen to it again to catch all the clues I missed the first time! 🎧✨
