https://amzn.to/3PJFAxG ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐For the past year, everyone has been talking about Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver, especially the audiobook version. I don’t usually read dark romances, but I love romcoms. Turns out, this is a dark romcom! I was really intrigued. Butcher & Blackbird was probably the top TikTok book of the year, and honestly, some of the other big BookTok hits I tried were total letdowns. Still, I kept my hopes high.
I’m so glad I did because Butcher & Blackbird totally lived up to the hype. It was unlike anything I’ve read before, which is part of what made it so special. The story was fun, but it was really the characters that made the book. Sloan and Rowan are both serial killers. They each take out the bad serial killers that the police can’t catch, but make no mistake — they love the killing. Even when they’ve gone after the same target, they’ve never actually met. That is, until they finally do — at a murder scene that’s gotten pretty...let’s say...dicey for Sloan.
Sloan, known as “the orb-weaver,” leaves her victims’ eyeballs behind and creates creepy, web-like art from flesh and body parts. Rowan, aka Butcher, has admired her from afar, but meeting her in person made him fall instantly. Their banter is amazing! I know it sounds weird to say about a serial killer, but Rowan was honestly adorable. He’s sweet and romantic! Yes, I said that. Yes, I know he’s a serial killer. What can I say? I’m a sucker for the sweet ones.
These two are complete psychopaths — as are their friends and family, who we’ll meet in the next two books — and honestly, they were so much fun! I don’t read or watch horror at all, and some parts were pretty gross, but thanks to the humor, it was never too much for me.
And I have to say, the narration is amazing. It’s a full duet, with Lucy Rivers voicing the female parts and Joe Arden doing the male voices. It felt like they were having a real conversation, which made the story so much more engaging. Honestly, I might not have loved the book as much if I just read it — the narration took it to a whole new level.
I highly recommend this audiobook. It’s so unique, funny, dark, and totally addictive. I really loved it and couldn’t put it down. I also think it’s perfect if you’re looking for something different — it’s raunchy, gory, romantic, and HOT. Just be sure to listen to the trigger warnings because some scenes are intense — but honestly, they made me laugh a few times too. Anyone up for “accidental cannibalism”? 😅
And I have to say, I’m so excited that Leather and Lark (book two) is out because I’m not ready to leave this world yet. I totally recommend listening to this audiobook — it’s a wild ride I won’t forget!
