It’s as much about his own experience of how the Manson case took over his life as it is about the case itself. I know that might sound off-putting, but honestly, it’s really great. Tom O’Neill doesn’t try to fill in every blank with confident answers. He’s very honest about what’s speculation and what’s based on circumstantial evidence. He openly admits he couldn’t find “the solution” that completes all the missing pieces.
I highly recommend this audiobook because it kept me hooked the entire time and I really enjoyed it. I also think it’s a must-listen for anyone interested in true crime or American history. It’s very compelling and I honestly loved it. 😊
The book is satisfying for two main reasons. First, because he uncovers one shocking, never-before-known detail after another-way more than I expected after so many years. There are plenty of new revelations, and they’re pretty mind-blowing. Second, the honesty and vulnerability he shows about his personal struggle to solve the case really make the story even more powerful. You can tell he put his heart and soul into this, risking his career and reputation just to keep digging.
He shares his setbacks, missed deadlines, depression, and even moments of hopelessness, which makes everything feel more real and relatable. In the end, he delivers a thoroughly researched, expertly written, and meticulously edited book with loads of citations. Honestly, many books I’ve read lately are riddled with typos and errors, but this one is truly professional-quality.
If I were to give it five stars, I would, but I tend to reserve that for only the very best. This book is more than just entertainment. It’s a powerful correction of a huge piece of American social history that was wildly wrong. The stories around the Manson murders reveal deep corruption within our justice system, law enforcement, and intelligence agencies—things that have shaped our culture for decades. If we don’t understand the truth, we’re living a lie.
This book helps bring that awareness into the mainstream. The author sacrificed a lot to reveal the real story, and I think he did a huge service to the world. I’m sorry if this is a bit of a long read—I’m not the best at writing these days, but I just wanted to share how much I loved this audiobook. Definitely worth listening to! 🎧
