https://amzn.to/3NpTC76 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐“Confidence is showing up, trying, and not giving up because deep in your heart you know who you are and what you’re capable of.” — Deep End, Ali Hazelwood
I absolutely loved this book! The characters, their flaws, and their vulnerability really spoke to me. I’ve read many of Ali Hazelwood’s books and always enjoy her writing style. She’s so consistent in writing science-based romance novels, and I appreciate knowing what I’m getting into when I pick up one of her books (except maybe Bride… if you know, you know). I preordered this one and couldn’t wait for it to arrive at my door. When I opened the package, I immediately fell in love — those sprayed edges that look like pool water are gorgeous. I was obsessed even before I cracked it open!
Honestly, I highly recommend this book. It’s one of those stories that just stays with you — I couldn’t put it down. I also really enjoyed it and found it super relatable and fun. I think you’ll love it too!
Out of all the characters, Scarlett felt the most flawed, and I almost felt privileged to learn more about her past (until Lukas, of course). It was like being part of her story because she shared her heart with the reader and trusted us to keep her secrets. She only opened up to others when she felt comfortable, and I loved seeing her grow by the end of the book.
Lukas is this strong, chiseled Olympic swimmer, and Ali did an amazing job showing a man who’s in control of everything and knows exactly what he wants — through Lukas, I could really feel that. I loved how Lukas gave Vandy everything she needed and created a safe space for her to be her true self. He also got more comfortable as the story went on, which was nice to see.
My friend and I read this together, and she devoured it too. I’ve always loved Ali Hazelwood’s books, and I definitely recommend this one. One thing I want to mention is that this book was advertised as a kinky romance with some BDSM elements. I was expecting more on that front when they shared their kink list, but it didn’t quite go as deep as I thought it would. Still, I’m excited to see what Ali Hazelwood writes next because I love her style, and I hope she explores that genre more in future books.
Even with that small thing, I give it five stars. I would recommend it to anyone and would happily read it again — it’s that good!
My Review Checklist:Spoilers✅ Character development — Scarlett’s anxiety, frustrations, and desire to improve diving felt so real. I was right there with her in every step of her journey. When Penelope drunkenly told her ex and her dive partner to sleep together, I knew things were about to get interesting. Penelope’s role in pushing the plot forward was unexpected but fun. Scarlett and Lukas’s chemistry was undeniable, and their desire to explore that was a big part of the story.
All the characters were pretty involved in each other’s lives — sometimes a little too much, maybe, but I get it. In collegiate sports, you often get close and up in each other’s business, so it made sense.
✅ Atmosphere — Scarlett and Penelope definitely had their emotions, but Lukas seemed a bit more reserved, probably because he’s meant to be this tough Olympic athlete with a cold European vibe. I think Scarlett brought out more feelings in him as the story progressed. The college campus setting was perfect for the swimming storyline and provided a great backdrop for all the plot points.
I love Ali Hazelwood’s writing style. I’ve yet to read a book of hers I didn’t like, and this one is no exception. I could feel her signature voice throughout.
✅ Plot — I stayed engaged the whole way through. There were a few slow parts, but they didn’t last long or pull me out of the story. The plot was easy to follow, and the characters had depth. The pacing kept me interested from start to finish.
Overall, I just really enjoyed this book and would definitely recommend it!
