This author writes in the first person after spending two years with Elon Musk, which gives a really interesting look into the life of the richest man from his childhood up to today. Isaacson does a great job similar to the biography he wrote for Steve Jobs—sometimes Musk is even compared to Jobs. I really liked how the book is structured with short chapters in chronological order, making it easy to jump through the story quickly. Even though it’s an easy read, I found it hard to put down in one sitting. 📖
I highly recommend this audiobook because it kept me hooked from start to finish. The way Isaacson moves back and forth through Musk’s many business ventures and personal life makes the story super engaging. He interviewed most of the people who have been close to Elon, and many of their quotes are included directly. It feels like a long but enjoyable "beach read" as it covers the development of Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, Neuralink, and Twitter—all in the pursuit of landing humans on Mars. 🚀
Throughout the book, you get inside details about Musk’s decisions regarding these companies and his personal life. I found chapters 80-83 especially interesting when he takes over Twitter and then cuts the staff by 75%, yet the platform keeps running smoothly. Honestly, I think this might hint at how DOGE could change the US civil service workforce someday!
Just like during the COVID pandemic, America hasn't seen anyone like Elon Musk since Herbert Hoover, who was also an engineer. Luckily, Musk can't become president, but this book really shows him as a visionary, much like Henry the Navigator in Portugal—persistent and determined like General George Patton. His vision and drive will probably lead humans to live on other planets, and maybe your grandchildren will be mining asteroids someday! 🌌
The book is very well-organized with a detailed table of contents, notes, references, and a helpful index. It even has black-and-white photos that go along with each chapter. The timeline ends in April 2023 after the SpaceX Starship launch. If you’re interested in the American Dream and inspiring stories of innovation, I definitely recommend grabbing this audiobook!
