“The first year claims some of us entirely. The second year strips the rest of our humanity” – Xaden Riorson
Most anticipated that Violet Sorrengail wouldn’t make it through her first year at Basgiath War College – Violet herself included. Yet, Threshing was merely the initial brutal trial designed to eliminate the weak, the unworthy, and the unfortunate.
Now, the true ordeal begins, and Violet is already questioning how she’ll endure it. It’s not solely because it’s exhausting and mercilessly savage, or even because it’s meant to push the riders’ limits of pain beyond reason. It’s also due to the new vice commandant, who has set out to show Violet just how powerless she truly is – unless she chooses to betray the man she loves.
Though Violet’s body may be more fragile and less resilient than her peers, her mind remains sharp, and her spirit unbreakable. Yet, leadership requires relearning the most vital lesson that Basgiath has ever imparted: dragon riders carve their own destiny.
But a fierce will to survive will no longer suffice this year.
Because Violet is aware of the centuries-old secret concealed within Basgiath War College – and in the end, not even dragon fire may be enough to save them all.
The Empyrean series is best enjoyed in order.

https://amzn.to/47DTvvo ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Guys, I’m serious — 2023 is my year for reading! I can’t tell you how many books I’ve read that have blown me away with how beautiful, amazing, and just overall top-tier they are. This novel is no exception.
Coming into this book, I wasn’t quite sure what to expect. The only other book I’ve read by Rebecca Yarros is The Things We Leave Unfinished. Also incredible, but if you’ve read it, you know it’s on a totally different level than this one. I mean, Fourth Wing is set in a whole new world and isn’t a historical romance. But it’s epic, and I don’t use that word lightly.
Fourth Wing is a fantasy novel set in Navarre, where dragons, griffins, and magic are real. If you’ve read my reviews before, you know I rarely review fantasy books. Honestly, the only other fantasy I’ve reviewed was The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, which was kind of a real-world fantasy, so it wasn’t too far outside my comfort zone. But this book? It totally was outside my usual genre, and I loved it so much. Now I think I’ve been missing out on all these amazing fantasy stories, and I might just binge-read them all.
I highly recommend this book - I really loved it, and I think you will too! It’s such a captivating read, and I couldn’t put it down. Honestly, I enjoyed every part of it and can’t wait for the next book in the series.
So, what did I love about this novel? Everything. The world-building is absolutely insane and makes the story even more engaging. The characters aren’t your typical clichés, especially our main heroine, Violet. She’s not the strongest rider, and she doesn’t fit the mold — which made me root for her even more. Instead of becoming the greatest, she just adapts and finds her own way, and that’s what makes her so relatable and real.
The plot? Unbeatable. It’s full of foreshadowing, a romantic subplot, tension, and high stakes that keep you hooked from start to finish. I’m not sure how many books they’ll make in this series, but I’m here for every single one.
And Rebecca Yarros’ writing style? It’s spectacular. The epic battle scenes, the romantic moments that tug at your heart, and the funny snippets that made me laugh out loud — it’s got everything. I was entertained the entire time.
Overall, I honestly don’t have many dislikes about this book. It’s just that good. If you’re into fantasy, you’ll fall in love with it. Even if you’re not a big fantasy fan, I think you’ll still enjoy it. I’ve already recommended it to my book club, my mom, and my brother. Y’all should definitely check it out!
And I’ll leave you with my favorite quote: “And when others are quick to stand in front of me, Xaden always stands at my side, trusting me to hold my own.”
📚✨ Happy reading, everyone!
