Audiobook: Audiobook: Greenlights. By Matthew McConaughey ⁣I’ve spent half a century navigating this journey of life, spending forty-two years trying to decipher its deepest mysteries, and for the past thirty-five, I’ve been keeping journals filled with clues and insights. ⁣https://audiobooks.ink/product..../greenlights-matthew These notes capture my triumphs and setbacks, moments of joy and sorrow, things that made me stop in awe, and those that made me burst into laughter. Buy audiobook to explore more stories and lessons.
I’ve pondered how to be fairer, how to reduce stress, how to find more fun in everyday moments, how to hurt others less, and how to protect myself from pain. I’ve reflected on becoming a better man, finding purpose, and simply becoming more authentic to myself.
Recently, I mustered the courage to revisit those old diaries. I uncovered stories I lived through, lessons I once knew but then forgot, poems, prayers, personal prescriptions, core beliefs about what truly matters, some incredible photographs, and even a collection of bumper stickers that once motivated me. Amid all this, I discovered a consistent theme – a way of living that brought me greater satisfaction then and continues to do so today. It’s about understanding how and when to face life’s challenges – how to develop a sense of acceptance toward the inevitable. When you master this, you enter a state I call “catching greenlights”.

“The No. 1 celebrity memoir of the past 10 years” – USA Today
Show Notes:[1:00] Jordan Peterson kicks off the conversation by asking why and how Matthew McConaughey wrote his book Greenlights.[4:00] Matthew realized he needed to write the book himself without a ghostwriter as initially planned and dig back into his journals as a form of necessary reflection on the past.[6:00] Matthew’s old journals revealed their common thread through all the stories, poems, and bumper stickers. That common thread was the creation of good things in life through mindset or action “Greenlights.”[12:00] Jordan talks about his initial response after reading Matthew’s book and how his expectations were changed.[14:00] Matthew talks about his solo trips when starting to create the structure of his book. Jordan comments that this was a book written by a celebrity that did not really focus on the traditional parts of being a celebrity (very family-focused and foundational). Matthew states, “When we were editing the book, I found that the more personal the stories became, the more relatable they seemed to become, to the human condition, and that was my hope.”[18:00] Jordan and Matthew revisit the African trip, chasing dreams and having the same exact dream multiple times over the span of many years.[24:00] What was the personal impact on Matthew during his trip to Africa where he got to strip away the identity we all know him for and exist as something else? Jordan comments that very often, people confuse their reputation with who they really are, and they start to act as a representation of their reputation instead of themselves; it’s an easy trap to fall into.[22:00] Matthew discusses dealing with the pitfalls of fame. Matthew covers his changing relationship with his mother due to success.[25:00] Jordan B. Peterson asks Matthew McConaughey about some of his acting work in True Detective and playing dark characters. “How do you play a dark role very well without letting the darkness invade you?”[32:00] Matthew talks about the positive aspects of the sometimes tense relationship with his father and having a childhood that balanced love and hardship directed from the same people.[37:00] Jordan and Matthew continue talking about going deeper into the psychology of a dark character like Rustin Cole on True Detective[45:30] Matthew expanded on the short-term effects of initial fame.[51:30] Matthew and Jordan discuss the long-term effects of fame. [55:00] Jordan points out, “If flawed people were incapable of creativity, we would have no creativity.”[1:03:00] How Matthew and Jordan first became friends.[1:07:30] Matthew shares a comical review of his own book written as if Jordan was the one reviewing it.

https://amzn.to/4dtEboM ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐Greenlights, written by Matthew McConaughey, is honestly one of the best autobiographies I’ve ever listened to and read. I first ordered it on Audible and enjoyed it so much that I also bought a hard copy. The actor narrated Greenlights himself, and I have to say, he totally spoiled me for every other audiobook I’ll ever listen to. His storytelling flow is perfect — it’s like he’s just calling you on the phone to share his stories. His voice is so relaxed and natural that it feels like you’re just chatting with a friend. The way he reads it, combined with his story, is absolutely incredible.
This book doesn’t feel like a typical memoir — it’s more like a motivational guide. It doesn’t sound like he’s reading from a script; he keeps the story smooth and easy to follow. I listened to it twice before moving on to another audiobook, and I definitely plan to listen to it again. I truly recommend this audiobook — it’s such a powerful and inspiring listen.
Matthew McConaughey comes across as a super down-to-earth and genuine guy. He doesn’t seem to let fame get to his head. He’s honest, raw, and captivating all at once. I honestly love how real he is.
Now let’s talk about what’s inside the book. Matthew’s life has been full of adventures. He’s had the means to do what he wants and the perseverance from childhood to make it happen. I find his choices fascinating. He’s very honest about everything — from his parents’ complicated relationship, which he eventually accepted as their way of loving each other, to stories about traveling to Australia and Africa. His stories are funny, sad, intense, and everything in between.
I’m so impressed with his storytelling skills. I also admire his life philosophy. He’s a humble guy who accepts people for who they are and is always open to learning new things. He doesn’t act like he knows everything. He’s the kind of person who makes a commitment and sticks to it no matter what. He lives life on his own terms and I really respect that.
He shares pictures and side notes along with his stories, which makes it even more fun to see photos of him throughout his life. He’s the kind of person who turns red lights into green ones — always moving forward. I love that he’s a progressive thinker and that he’s patient even when things don’t go perfectly.
Matthew stays true to himself. He’s not arrogant or cocky — he tells his stories with passion and shares lessons he’s learned along the way. He’s chosen adventures that teach him more about life. Watching his journey, you can see how he’s grown and evolved. He’s flexible and open-minded, balancing intense work with moments of relaxation when needed.
He reflects on his past, present, and future as he tells his story. I also really like how he talks about the people around him, especially his wife. He chose well — she seems just as grounded and down-to-earth as he is. She didn’t care about his fame and made him work for their relationship. I love that even though he’s a successful actor, he acts like a regular person. He traveled across the country in an Airstream, staying in RV parks, making friends along the way, and never acting like he’s better than anyone else.
Of course, this is just my opinion from listening and reading. He might be exaggerating or spinning a story, but honestly, I don’t think so. Even if he is, he makes everything so believable and entertaining.
I give the book, both hardcover and audiobook, five stars. I really recommend it to everyone — it’s inspiring, fun, and such a great listen! 🌟
