Half His Age tells the story of Waldo, a 17-year-old girl who gets involved with her married, almost 40-year-old creative writing teacher. The story is told from Waldo’s perspective, but Jennette makes sure we never forget what’s really going on — grooming, manipulation, and abuse are shown with brutal honesty. The discomfort is intentional. You’re supposed to feel angry, trapped, and even sick to your stomach.
What makes this novel so powerful is that Waldo isn’t a “perfect victim.” She’s unlikeable, self-centered, judgmental, obsessive, and convinced she knows everything better than everyone around her — just like a lonely, neglected teen often is. She actively pursues her teacher, thinking she’s in control, but as readers, we can see clearly how the power imbalance, authority, and emotional neglect influence every interaction. The author breaks down this dynamic without romanticizing it for a second.
The writing is simple and straightforward but also sharp and raw, hitting deep on purpose. It circles around the same emotions in a way that feels suffocating — and that’s exactly what Jennette wants. She details all the stages and different masks of abuse. The story explores more than exploitation — it also touches on motherhood, neglect, poverty, class, internalized misogyny, consumerism, loneliness, and that dangerous hunger to be seen and chosen.
This isn’t an easy read. It’s vulgar, unsettling, and emotionally draining, but it’s also honest, fearless, and deeply human. I didn’t want to stop reading, but I also couldn’t put it down. By the end, I felt completely wrung out and furious — and honestly, that’s probably what the author intended.
I really recommend this book — it’s intense but so worth it. I also really liked it and think it’s a must-read for anyone ready to face uncomfortable truths.
This book will definitely be polarizing but absolutely necessary. 📚✨
5 🌟 what an incredibly sad, hard & raw book…One that I don’t think we’re necessarily supposed to enjoy, but Jennette tells the story in such a unique, shockingly honest way that I really appreciate it. The subject matter is undeniably difficult, but I think Jennette did a fantastic job of writing it. The audiobook makes it MUCH more impactful, as Jennette is the narrator. I did have a hard time separating her from the female main character in the book, but maybe that was purposeful? Either way…a difficult but strong addition to your tbr!!
