Jennette was only six when she stepped into the world of acting. Driven by her mother’s dream for her to achieve stardom, she did everything possible to please her. She endured strict “calorie restriction,” eating sparingly and weighing herself multiple times daily. She faced numerous at-home makeovers, with her mother often saying, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” Jennette was even showered by her mother until age sixteen, sharing her diaries, emails, and income along the way.
In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette lays bare these experiences with brutal honesty – detailing what happens when her childhood dream finally materializes. Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is suddenly thrust into the spotlight. While her mother is elated – emailing fan club moderators and forming a close bond with paparazzi (“Hi Gale!”) – Jennette struggles with overwhelming anxiety, shame, and self-hate. These feelings manifest as eating disorders, addiction, and unhealthy relationships. Her struggles intensify after landing the lead role in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, especially following her mother’s death from cancer.
Eventually, Jennette finds therapy, quits acting, and begins her journey toward healing. For the first time, she starts to define her own path and discover what she truly wants. With refreshing honesty and dark humor, I’m Glad My Mom Died is an inspiring testament to resilience, independence, and the importance of self-love – like shampooing your own hair.#nightline #jennettemccurdy #actresses #entertainment

The title of this book didn’t just catch my eye. It grabbed me from behind like a stage hook. My first instinct when I saw it on Amazon was to close my laptop fast and pretend I’d never seen it. My mom passed away a few years ago, and just the thought of holding this book with its raw, daring title made me break out in a cold sweat. I’ve told so many people about my feelings for her over the years, always trying to separate fact from fiction and understand the mixed emotions that have weighed heavy between us forever. Feelings like that aren’t exactly normal, right? Not the feelings of a good girl growing up. Not feelings about your mom.
But never underestimate the power of a good book title. This one drew me in despite my initial hesitation and refused to let go. Honestly, I hope it never does. It’s that good, meaningful, and important.
Don’t be fooled by the cover. This memoir by former Nickelodeon star Jennette McCurdy isn’t a comedy, even though you might find yourself chuckling here and there. It’s a serious account of her young life struggling with early fame in Hollywood, the misguided values and unreasonable pressures from her stage mom, the fear of loss, the deep grief, the quicksand of addiction, and the grip of compulsions like bulimia. It’s about hitting rock bottom, asking for help, relapsing, and then getting back up again. It’s about finally understanding the reasons behind all the confusing pieces of her life puzzle. Seeing it all laid out helps make sense of it, and that’s the only way to move forward. It’s a hero’s journey, and McCurdy not only took that journey herself but shares it with us in this incredible memoir.
What makes this book stand out among so many stories about dysfunctional parenting? For me, it’s McCurdy’s brutal honesty and bravery. It takes guts to open up about your mother—who gave you life and raised you—especially when she’s also been through her own trauma. Sometimes, even when you’re the victim, others might defend the damaged parent, which just fuels guilt and shame. That’s so common. You feel angry at someone who’s supposed to love you, and that feels so unnatural. Honestly, I found myself relating to her raw honesty and her owning her feelings.
I highly recommend this audiobook. I listened to it and was completely captivated. It’s powerful, emotional, and inspiring. I really enjoyed how authentic and unflinching Jennette is—her story made me think differently about pain, forgiveness, and self-acceptance. This isn’t just a memoir; it’s a gift of understanding and healing. If you’re into stories about overcoming struggles and finding strength in vulnerability, you’ll love this one too.
