It might just be me, but I don’t quite understand all the hype about this book. Honestly, I found the author's writing style pretty frustrating. He seems to intentionally mislead the reader just to create a big twist that’s supposed to hit you emotionally. I prefer authors who can make me feel something through great characters and a compelling story, without needing to manipulate me.
The main problem is that the characters often say things or share information in ways that don’t make sense—it's just not realistic. It feels like the only reason they talk that way is so the author can reveal a twist later on. In this particular book, he sets up a major event early on and teases it for the next hundred pages. When it finally happens, it’s not what I expected at all. And then I look back and wonder why the characters said certain things at certain times, only to realize it was all just for a shocking switch in the end.
Plus, the dialogue is overly philosophical, with characters speaking in weird metaphors that no one would ever actually say. It’s fine for a bit, but it happens on almost every page, which pulls me right out of the story.
It kind of reminds me of the show This is Us, which tries to manipulate your feelings to make you emotional. I prefer shows like Parenthood, where every emotional moment is earned through honest and authentic writing. That kind of storytelling really resonates with me. My wife enjoyed this book and liked This is Us, but honestly, it just doesn’t work for me.
That said, I think you might enjoy this book. If you’re okay with the author manipulating the story through unrealistic dialogue and character choices, you might find it compelling.
I actually recommend this audiobook — I think it’s worth a listen. It was very entertaining, and I really liked how it kept me guessing. Honestly, I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected and would definitely listen to more by this author! 🎧😊
