I’ve read all of David Baldacci’s books and have always considered him my favorite author. But if I’d read this novel without knowing it was by him, I would swear it wasn’t. The style reminded me more of Jack Mars, D.V. Berkom, Barry Eisler, or one of those second-tier thriller writers. Those books are fun to read, but they’re not on the same level as Baldacci’s.
That’s why I was so surprised. Honestly, this book, Nash Falls, felt like a big step down from Baldacci’s usual standards. It’s a typical “ordinary person becomes superhuman and saves the world” story, with a totally unrealistic plot, lots of foul language, sex, and violence. Things I usually didn’t see in Baldacci’s books before, and I really appreciated that.
And I have to say, I recommend this book. Despite its flaws, I really enjoyed it and am definitely interested in reading the next one. The character development and writing are still better than most of those second-tier authors I mentioned earlier. Plus, it was a quick, entertaining read.
That said, I was pretty disappointed that Nash Falls just stops in the middle of the story. It’s not even a cliffhanger — it just ends, and you have to buy the next book to find out what happens. Only desperate authors do that, usually giving away the first book for free. For Baldacci, a bestselling author, to charge full price for half a story and leave readers hanging is pretty unforgivable.
Honestly, I think Nash Falls should have been a free book. It’s not fair to leave us with no closure after paying full price. But despite that, I really liked it and I think it’s worth a read. I really enjoyed the story and the characters, and I think it’s a good start for the series.
Overall, I really liked this audiobook, and I recommend giving it a try. It’s a different style from Baldacci’s usual work, but I still found it entertaining and engaging. If you’re into thrillers, I think you’ll enjoy it too! 😊📚
