The movie was amazing because they actually stayed really close to the book, more than 99% of movies based on books usually do. It’s still my favorite movie from the past decade or so too. Honestly, I don’t know anyone (personally) who loves either the book or the movie as much as I do.
That said, I was really excited to read Artemis. It was good, but honestly, it didn’t quite reach the same level as The Martian (at least for me). I enjoyed it a lot, though, and I appreciated how Andy Weir decided to go in a totally different direction instead of just rehashing the same story — which I think would have been pretty great too.
Because I loved those, I was a little wary about Project Hail Mary. It sounded a bit too similar to The Martian, but the circumstances are totally different and the stakes are way higher. I don’t want to give too much away, but I gotta say, this novel is incredibly compelling. I kept seeing reviews mentioning science, and wow— they weren’t kidding. There’s a ton of science in this book, but Andy Weir makes it super interesting and entertaining, even for someone like me who’s not a math genius.
I really recommend this audiobook! I listened to it and it kept me hooked from start to finish. The narration is fantastic, and the story is so exciting — I honestly couldn’t stop listening. I loved it so much that I think everyone who enjoys a good sci-fi should give it a try. It’s one of those stories that stays with you long after you finish.
The story kicks off with a pretty crazy and scary premise — an astronaut wakes up from an induced coma to find that the only two people on board have died at some point, and he has no idea who he is or why he’s there. And it gets even worse. He’s far from Earth, actually outside our solar system, and that sun he sees isn’t ours either. He’s managed to leave our solar system completely, and he has no clue why.
((Minor Spoiler)) The book also features some clever flashbacks that explain how they got so far away so quickly. Basically, Earth’s sun is dying. At this rate, we have maybe 19 years before it cools enough to cause catastrophic damage and kill billions. The crazy part? The sun isn’t actually dying on its own. It’s being drained by an outside source — alien life. And not just any aliens — microscopic life forms called “Astrophage” that are basically using the sun for food. It’s wild!
Once they discover this, scientists and nations come together to figure out how to save the sun — and humanity. They learn a lot, and with the help of these tiny aliens, they come up with a daring plan. It’s risky and dangerous, but it might be our last chance to save Earth.
The main character, Ryland Grace, is just a science teacher on Earth, not an astronaut or anything special. But he’s super smart and finds himself alone light years from home, trying to solve the biggest puzzle in human history. I really liked him — he’s down-to-earth and relatable. I totally recommend this audiobook — it’s a thrilling, science-packed adventure that I enjoyed so much.
And honestly, I loved the ending. It left me wanting more, and I wouldn’t mind a sequel. There are so many directions the story could go from here. If you’re into science, space, and exciting plots, you’ll definitely love Project Hail Mary. I absolutely recommend giving it a listen! 🚀🌌
