Darrow is a Red, belonging to the lowest caste in the futuristic, color-coded society. He works willingly, trusting that his blood and labor will eventually lead to a brighter future for his children. https://audiobooks.ink/product..../red-rising-by-pierc
However, Darrow and his kind have been deceived. He soon uncovers that humanity reached the planet’s surface long ago. Massive cities and thriving wilderness cover the landscape. Darrow – and Reds like him – are merely slaves serving a corrupt and indulgent ruling elite.
Fueled by a deep desire for justice and haunted by memories of a lost love, Darrow risks everything to infiltrate the renowned Institute, a testing ground for the elite Gold caste, where the next rulers of humanity vie for dominance. He must fight for his life and the future of civilization against the most formidable and ruthless members of Society’s ruling class. In his relentless pursuit to dismantle his enemies, he’s prepared to do whatever it takes – even if it means becoming one of them.

Back in 2007, I remember starting to read Game of Thrones, the first book in George R.R. Martin’s epic Song of Ice and Fire series. It took me a few chapters to really get the hang of the style and language, but once I did, I was completely hooked.
Since then, nothing has grabbed me quite like that… until I picked up Red Rising, the first book in Pierce Brown’s Red Rising trilogy. I couldn’t put it down, seriously! It was so intense that I lost interest in everything else. I wasn’t gaming with my husband or hanging out with friends — all I wanted to do was read. Everything about this book is incredible, especially the setting, the characters, and the writing.
I highly recommend this audiobook — it’s one of my favorites! I absolutely loved it and think you will too. The story is a mix of sci-fi and fantasy, set in the far future where planets are colonized and ruled by powerful families. The main character, Darrow, is a 16-year-old Red living a simple life underground on Mars with his wife and family. In Darrow’s world, people are classified by colors — not skin color, but by their social status and skills. The Golds are the elites, while Reds are the workers and the poorest.
Pierce Brown does an amazing job creating complex, believable characters who are flawed, wicked, yet redeeming. They’re vulnerable, deadly, beautiful, and real — I found myself rooting for them and feeling all their emotions. His use of slang and dialect is so fluid that I was instantly drawn into Darrow’s world. It took some getting used to, but that made it even more exciting to understand this intricate language and setting. His descriptions made my imagination dance and I felt like I was right there with the characters, experiencing everything firsthand.
I don’t want to give away too much because the plot is just so good — I think it’s the best part of the book. But I will say, it follows Darrow, who lives underground on Mars with other Reds. One day, he and his wife Eo get caught breaking the rules, and the punishment is brutal — a public whipping. During the display, Eo sings a forbidden song, which leads to her being executed in front of everyone. Her death sparks Darrow’s quest for revenge, which quickly turns into an incredible journey.
I honestly CAN’T RECOMMEND THIS BOOK ENOUGH. It’s my favorite since Game of Thrones. I plan to listen to it again and again. And guess what? They’re making a movie! The details are still a bit hush-hush, but it’s officially listed as “in development” on IMDB. I’m so excited! 🎬
Pierce Brown is a talented writer and screenwriter living in Los Angeles. He moved around a lot growing up because of his mom’s career. He graduated from Pepperdine University in 2010 and sold Red Rising in 2012. His debut novel was a bestseller, reaching #20 on the NY Times list, and the sequels did even better — with Morning Star hitting #1. Brown has received several awards, including the Goodreads Best New Author in 2014.
Overall, I think this audiobook is a must-listen. The story is captivating, the characters are unforgettable, and the writing is top-notch. Trust me, once you start, you won’t want to stop. I really recommend giving it a try — it’s an incredible ride! 🚀
