https://amzn.to/4uS08Ey ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐I first listened to “Still Life” by Louise Penny a few years ago, after my friend recommended it. I was hooked from the start and instantly wanted to move to Three Pines. On snowy afternoons, I could picture myself sitting by the cozy bistro fire with my friends, sipping coffee or wine, munching on pastry. I imagined browsing books at Myrna’s, having Armand and Reine-Marie as my wise neighbors, and doing art with Clara. Of course, I’d love the town poet’s quirky comments, knowing her cryptic jokes are full of affection. And the dogs would be curled up at my feet, just relaxing. Somehow, being there made all my worries and bills disappear. It felt like the perfect place to share joy and load off my shoulders — honestly, that’s always been my dream.
I highly recommend this audiobook — it’s truly a magical listening experience. I enjoyed it so much that I couldn’t stop. It’s one of those stories that stays with you long after it ends, and I really loved how immersive it was.
After 20 books in the series, I still feel the same excitement every time. I always preorder these audiobooks because I know I’ll love them. Have I ever been disappointed? Maybe once or twice, but mostly I know I’ll be back in Three Pines with my friends. As Penny herself says, she can’t keep all her characters in her head all the time, but that’s okay because each story is so well written and heartfelt. These books are my favorite escape, and I love visiting my friends in that charming little town again and again.
The latest one, “The Black Wolf,” is a sequel to “The Grey Wolf.” We know the good guys — our friends — and the bad guys, some of which have a little twist from the last book.
This story is honestly terrifying because it feels so close to what’s happening in our world right now. It’s pretty intense and not very warm, reflecting the chaos and frenetic energy of today’s politics. The research is thorough, and the story is woven so well that it really hits hard. It leaves you with lots of questions and a bit of anxiety. This isn’t a cozy read, but if you’re a Penny fan, you’ll love it. I’m not sure a newcomer could fully enjoy it without knowing the characters and their history.
Louise Penny has shared her own experience with loneliness and feeling lost in this world while writing this series. She creates a world where lonely folks can feel loved and understood. I feel like I’ve been on a journey with her, sharing her love, her losses, and my own. I picture her as my interesting friend sitting in front of the fire at the Bistro, always with a chocolate croissant in hand and a kind smile.
I might have screamed a little when I got my hands on this ARC. I refused to read it quickly though I really wanted to. It was so worth the savor. I love all things about Louise Penny’s writing. The nuggets of truth hidden among poetry that allows you to reflect and remember; the delightfully twisting and turning story line with imperfect people; the most perfect village in the world that we all want to return home to- I most very much enjoyed this latest book. It was worth the slow read and had all my most favorite things. I’m very much looking forward to sharing this with friends. Love love loved it.
