I’ve had this audiobook on my playlist for quite a while, along with a bunch of others I wanted to listen to. The other night, I finally decided to give it a try and I couldn’t stop listening! I was up late, and I kept finding little moments of free time just to hear more. Sometimes you pick up a story you’ve ignored for a while and it just blows your mind. That’s exactly what happened with this one — it was like discovering a hidden gem in a jewelry box. ✨
I honestly think this is one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to recently. The story is so well told and incredibly interesting. It’s about nine American rowers from the University of Washington — eight oarsmen and one coxswain — who aimed to be the best and win a gold medal at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. 🥇 The story mainly follows Joe Rantz, starting from his childhood all the way through his time at the university and his journey to become a rower. But what really pulled me in were his struggles before that — they made me admire him even more.
Joe lost his mother when he was just a kid. When his father remarried, his stepmother didn’t want him around, so he was abandoned by his family. At first, he lived with his older brother, then with others, and eventually on his own. Rantz had to learn how to survive on his own, and his resilience amazed me. What touched me most was that he held no resentment toward his father or stepmother — instead, he showed a kind of silent strength that made me proud of him and proud to be American. 🇺🇸
The story also introduces the other rowers in the crew and their coaches. Crew is such an interesting sport, and the book dives into how they built their shells and trained for the big race. There’s also this haunting backdrop of the 1936 Berlin Olympics, which plays a huge part in the story.
While the athletes were competing, there was something dark happening behind the scenes in Berlin. Hitler and his generals were putting on a show — flags flying high, soldiers marching in perfect formation. But underneath all that, the Germans were quietly erasing the Jewish community and preparing for the Holocaust. The book vividly describes how the Germans were removing signs of Jewish life from the city, building concentration camps, and orchestrating the terrible events that would follow.
I highly recommend this audiobook to anyone who loves a good story. It’s inspiring and powerful, but it also reveals the ugly truths of what was coming. Honestly, I wish I had listened to it sooner — it really left a lasting impression on me. If you’re looking for something that will fill you with hope and make you think, this is the one to choose.
