There’s just something so fascinating and intimate about experiencing a story through letters. It feels a little bit naughty, like you’ve snuck into someone’s private library and couldn’t resist reading the letters left on their desk. Over the years, I’ve read many epistolary novels and loved all of them. But Virginia Evans’s "The Correspondent" is next level. It’s so beautifully written, so emotionally powerful, that I honestly think she is the queen of modern epistolary novels.
I highly recommend this book — it truly touched my heart. I finished it feeling so moved that I cried like a baby, and I rarely do that! 😊 Honestly, it’s one of the most touching and well-crafted stories I’ve come across in a long time. If you’re into heartfelt, character-driven stories, you’ll love this book as much as I did.
This novel follows a grumpy woman in her seventies who’s facing a diagnosis that might make her go blind sooner rather than later. She writes letters over several years to her family, friends, and even some authors she’s recently read (which I thought was such a brave and inspiring choice — I want to try that myself!). Through her letters, you see that her heart has been broken by the loss of a child many years ago. You also learn about her complicated relationship with her adult daughter and a secret that could destroy her.
Despite her often blunt and sometimes funny missives, you can’t help but grow to love her. I felt like I was right there with her, experiencing her joys and pains. I really loved this book — it’s so genuine, tender, and beautifully written. It’s one of those stories that sticks with you long after you finish reading. Thank you, Ms. Evans, for such an incredible read. I wholeheartedly recommend it! 📚💖
