https://amzn.to/4rPIdf2 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Overall, this is a really well-written historical novel. Lawhon does an amazing job of creating a strong sense of place and time with solid historical details. Her characters feel very realistic, which is especially important since the story is based on real people and events. Because of that, the book reads so smoothly, and you really feel like you know these people and are right there with them.
I loved how the story highlights women’s rights and their fight for justice, which is so important. 💪😊 I honestly recommend this audiobook because I enjoyed it so much and found it really engaging. It definitely kept me hooked from start to finish!
That said, I do have a couple of critiques. First, Lawhon mentions that more first children were conceived outside of marriage than inside, which is not quite accurate according to historians. They say that no more than about a third of children at that time were born out of wedlock, and most of those were quickly legitimized with a trip to the church. It felt like a bit of a stretch to say otherwise, and that was a little frustrating.
Second, there are a few scenes and comments that are unnecessarily lewd. I know that’s pretty common in historical fiction, but it took away from the overall tone for me and felt a bit forced.
Even with those parts, I still really enjoyed the book and would give it four stars overall. 🌟 Definitely a great listen!
