That’s not to say you shouldn’t read it just because the movie covers most of the story. Honestly, I’d suggest watching the movie first and then reading the book. The film recreates almost every scene from the novel, so much so that it quotes a lot of the dialogue word for word. I recommend watching the movie first because when I read the book, I kept imagining the characters with the actors from the film. Every actor cast was perfect for their roles in "The Green Mile," so if you're like me and find it hard to picture faces and accents just from the words, the movie really helps with that.
A quick heads-up: while about 75% of the novel is translated to film almost perfectly, the movie cuts out some scenes that happen later in the book and changes the ending quite a bit - and honestly, I think that’s a good thing. The ending in the movie hits harder and feels more impactful. The final scenes in the book are good too, but compared to the movie, they don’t pack quite the same punch. There’s also a chapter at the very end of the book that feels unnecessary - it’s kind of tacked on and doesn’t really add anything to the story.
If you’re familiar with Stephen King’s work, then you know what to expect. His dialogue, slang, and vernacular are handled beautifully, and it really feels like someone you know is telling you this story. Especially in "The Green Mile," since it’s one of his few books told entirely from a first-person perspective. But it’s not just that the story is told from a first-person point of view - the narrator is a character himself, both inside and outside the story. It’s about an old man recalling his experiences from 60 years ago, and his storytelling is filled with honest opinions, random memories, and slang that make it feel authentic - like a real person sharing real memories.
Some people might find the story a little confusing at times because the narrative jumps back and forth. The chapters start in the present day and then flash back to the 1930s, which adds to the storytelling style. Unlike many of King’s books, this one doesn’t have monsters, aliens, or magic. Instead, it’s more of a period piece focusing on one strange man’s time on death row. And honestly, that’s not a bad thing at all. The story is compelling, like a mix of character study and classic mystery. The plot twist towards the end ramps up the drama and keeps you guessing, making the ending - both of the 1930s storyline and the present-day narration - truly unforgettable.
