As Greene explains in the introduction, this book is like a codebook for understanding people’s actions. Each chapter tells the story of some iconic individual or individuals who illustrate the law being discussed, along with advice on how to navigate these laws - if that’s even possible.
So, what are the laws (all about the negative sides or flaws of human nature) that Greene focuses on in this book? Irrationality, narcissism, role-playing, compulsive behavior, greed, shortsightedness, defensiveness, self-sabotage, repression, envy, grandiosity, gender rigidity, aimlessness, conformity, fickleness, aggression, generational blindness, and denial of death.
I honestly recommend this book - I found it so eye-opening and really enjoyed reading it. It’s packed with ideas and stories that give you a lot to think about for sure. I personally really liked the chapter on narcissism - it made me see some things about human nature in a new light. 💡
One thing I want to say is that I really liked the stories Greene uses to illustrate each law. They’re so detailed and intriguing that sometimes I’d forget what the main law was about! Also, I noticed he sometimes splits each law into many subcategories, which can feel a bit overwhelming, like trying to understand every nuance of snow in the Eskimo vocabulary. Depending on what you’re looking for, that might be more detail than necessary.
Another thing I wondered about was the chapter on gender rigidity - do those kinds of things really happen that often? Also, while there is a good bibliography, I wish there were more footnotes to support some of the more questionable points, in my opinion.
All in all, I think you’ll find this book well-written, interesting, and super educational. It’s great for understanding the less honorable ways people behave and how more honorable folks can deal with them successfully. I definitely recommend it - I really enjoyed reading it and learned a lot! 📚✨
