I want to start by saying that I usually don’t read many books because I never really get captivated or feel connected to the characters. I don’t usually feel like I’m there with them. But I have to say, this audiobook completely changed my mind.
About this version of the productThe audiobook came to me in perfect condition, and I was blown away by how beautiful the cover looked. The sound quality is fantastic, and the narration is so engaging that I felt totally immersed in the story. Honestly, I think this is one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to — I recommend it to everyone! I really enjoyed it and couldn’t stop listening.
About the story — SPOILER FREEThe Martian is one of the most well-written, funny, serious, and emotional books I’ve ever experienced. The narrator does an amazing job bringing Mark Watney to life — he’s charismatic, smart, and so resourceful. Listening to his witty jokes and clever problem-solving made me laugh out loud or just smile, even during tense moments (and no, I don’t think I’m crazy). The narration really makes you feel like you know Mark personally, which is why you end up caring so much about him.
The atmosphere is incredible — it truly captures the lonely, barren expanse of Mars. I recommend using noise-canceling headphones and playing some white noise, like wind sounds, to really get the feeling of being on Mars. After just a few minutes, I could picture everything clearly — from the habitat to the red plains — and I wish I could share my thoughts with a picture.
The story switches between Mark on Mars, NASA and JPL on Earth, and the crew on the spaceship Hermes, which takes them to and from Mars.
Overall thoughtsI should’ve taken some notes or added my favorite quotes — next time! But honestly, this is the best book I’ve listened to. I was so sad when it ended because I didn’t want it to be over, but I also felt so happy I experienced this story. Andy Weir is now one of my favorite authors, and I’ll definitely be listening to more of his books.
Please do yourself a favor and listen to this audiobook — I can’t recommend it enough. It’s a solid 10 out of 10 from me!
Light spoiler alert for the beginning:The story is about Mark Watney’s journey to survive after being left behind on Mars by his crew. They were six days into a 52-day mission to gather science and conduct experiments when a huge storm hit. The storm was so intense they had to evacuate, and Mark was hit by debris and lost. His crew, thinking he was dead, aborted the mission and left him behind.
Mark wakes up and makes it back to the habitat, where he has to solve a ton of problems in really creative ways. I couldn’t put the audiobook down — I kept wondering what would happen next and was glued to every word.
I won’t spoil the ending because it’s so emotional and powerful — both heartbreaking and uplifting at the same time.
