Whenever I review a book, I always think of this truth: there is the actual story and then there’s everyone’s perception of it. Most of us bring our own experiences and choices into what we read, which is why opinions about the same book can be so different. Luckily, there are thousands of authors out there writing so many different kinds of books. One person might think a book has too much description that slows things down, while another might love all the details. Some writers are better at crafting vivid scenes about places, clothes, and food, but if they didn’t include those things, we’d be stuck with only short stories — and that wouldn’t be very fun!
Another point where opinions differ is how realistic a story should be. In my view, an author does their job when they turn some part of the human experience — whether positive or negative — into a compelling read. The Wedding People by Alison Espach does just that. It tackles serious topics like depression and suicide with nuance, wisdom, and emotional power. Even though suicide is a heavy subject, I appreciate how the book shows concern for those suffering and the hope they need to seek help. On a positive note, statistics show that people who are rescued from the brink of disaster often feel grateful they didn’t succeed — regardless of how the rescue happened. I personally recommend this book and really enjoyed it — it’s one of those stories that stays with you long after you finish reading.
I try not to spoil anything, but Phoebe’s plans to check into a Victorian Hotel with the intent of ending her life have been discussed quite a bit already. Still, even though she meant it, she didn’t realize she was in the wrong place for that final act. The contrast between her inner turmoil and the over-the-top personality of Lila, the bride, is shocking. Phoebe’s self-criticism and constant worry about what others think are heartbreaking, but being put in a position to help others with smaller concerns gives her a chance to lift herself up — or maybe it’s just that different things matter more to different people.
Phoebe’s quiet, calm upbringing made her so focused on others’ opinions that she never stepped outside her comfort zone, even after she got married. But meeting Lila and her wedding crew starts to change her perspective for the first time in her life. How all this unfolds is a heartfelt, funny, tear-jerking story about self-discovery and finding your own path. Every character adds something unique to Phoebe’s growth — quirks, hangups, and all. And Clay, the groom, is someone Phoebe can be totally honest with about her feelings. Their evolving relationship is really clever. Oh, and there’s a vintage car scene that will have you laughing for days! 🚗😂
Books that really stand the test of time aren’t quick, easy reads — though those are fun too. They’re usually about the struggles of growing up, living a “normal” life (whatever that is), or exploring unforgettable subjects like Dickens’ orphanages or early mental hospitals. The reason they’re still loved today is that they take terrible situations and turn them into stories we can relate to, stories that remind us good things can come after the worst. I believe we’ll be reading this book for many years to come. I loved it so much I devoured it in a day and will definitely read it again — which is rare for me after so many years of reading. Without hype or personal bias, I just have to say — it’s the best book I’ve read this year.

Words cannot do justice to how brilliant this book is. The author left me speechless, a blubbering machine like those waving cat statues you see in Eastern places, with the exception that I kept repeating, “I love it! I love it! I love it!”

Phoebe is real! She’s not an ordinary book character. You can easily see parts of her that are similar to you: resonating, bluntly honest, depressingly expressive, a woman who finally dares to say enough is enough, leaving her old life with only a dress and uncomfortable shoes, without looking back, just aiming to cut away the pain like a rotted piece.
