But in 1965, as the world is shifting rapidly around her, Frankie begins to see a different future. With her brother preparing to serve in Vietnam, she decides to enlist in the Army Nurse Corps, following his example.
New to combat and inexperienced like the soldiers she tends to, Frankie is overwhelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day becomes a dangerous gamble – balancing life and death, hope and despair – where friendships are strong yet fragile, easily broken. Through her journey, she meets and becomes part of the brave, the wounded, and the lost.
Yet, war is only the beginning for Frankie and her fellow veterans. The real challenge is returning home to a nation changed and divided – facing protests and a country eager to forget the scars of Vietnam.

The Women by Kristin Hannah is such an incredible listen. It’s about Frankie McGrath, a young, optimistic, but a bit naive nurse who’s only 21 when we meet her. She decides to join the US Army to serve as a nurse in Vietnam during the height of the war. She has no idea what she’s really signing up for, and her basic training doesn’t even come close to preparing her for what’s ahead.
Her time in Vietnam is honestly heartbreaking. Hannah takes us deep into the geography, the climate, the brutal conditions of the hospitals, and the constant fear that hangs over everyone. It’s all so intense and gut-wrenching. At the same time, she makes close friends with other nurses and soldiers, forming bonds that feel so real. And of course, several men become very interested in her, and her relationships with them are just as life-changing as her experiences in Vietnam. She’s as prepared to handle the men as she is to handle the war.
When she comes back home, she’s shocked by the hostility towards Vietnam veterans, including herself. She also can’t believe how indifferent her family and friends from her high school and country club life are about her time there. 💔
Frankie struggles deeply with PTSD. I won’t go into all the details, but she hits rock bottom more than once.
Honestly, I highly recommend this audiobook. It’s a powerful piece of historical fiction. Hannah keeps you hooked, and the emotional rollercoaster, along with the believable twists and turns, make it impossible to stop listening. I’ve read other war stories and even written some myself, but Hannah’s depiction of the field hospitals is so vivid, stomach-turning, and authentic.
I also want to say I really loved this book. It’s not just a war story — it’s about coming of age, love, family, friendship, and personal growth. Hannah has such a gentle but honest way of showing how Frankie changes because of her experiences. Everything about her journey is so compelling, and I found myself rooting for her the whole time.
If you’re into emotional, well-told stories, I think you’ll really enjoy this one. I definitely recommend giving it a listen! 🎧

Not enough stars to rate this book. I never could’ve imagined myself being sucked into a historical fiction but here we are. I am ashamed to admit I had no idea what truly went on. I feel like blinders have been taken off & the storytelling in this one is 10/10. Add this to the top of your TBR, you may surprise yourself.
